COVID-19 has hit tourism-reliant destinations hard, and one of the many of those locations is the Indonesian island of Bali. In Bali, 70% of the population depends on tourism and the area has seen extensive job and income losses since it closed its borders in April. In the past, the island’s image as a peaceful paradise with a rich cultural and religious heritage has made it a highly resilient tourist destination, but with the pandemic, Bali is wanting to take a different approach to saving the island. Bali will attempt to adjust its model away from surfing, parties and yoga, and gear it toward rural villages and nature. Some of the activities in these areas can include everything from dolphin watching and snorkelling trips, to food tourism and “experience tourism” focused on traditional fishing and farming. Many places are beginning to take this pivot, and Bali could be one of the many to start this trend to sustain tourism post-COVID-19.
